Jenn Falik, beauty expert for CBS' The Early Show, has shared her tips on working the statement lip and recommended a sheer rather than matte finish.
Speaking on the show, she said: 'Matte lips are gorgeous, but sheer colours blend better, creating a more 'you' shade.'
The other advantage of using a semi-sheer natural lipstick is that it can be layered so you can ramp up the level of brightness as required, Ms Falik said.
This means you can use 'the same lipstick to go from a pretty hint of pink during the day to a fabulous neon at night'.
Ms Falik also recommended using a lipstick primer as highly pigmented colour slides around and fades relatively quickly.
This is similar to recent advice from celebrity makeup artist and Pearl Drops spokesperson Ariane Poole, who has said that using bright shades on the lips is a great way to enhance the smile.
