Expert: Don't damage natural beauty with sunbeds

Women and men should not damage their natural beauty by using sunbeds excessively, an expert has warned.

However, with the influx of health warnings, many people are tuning out despite the message's importance and natural skin care routines are being ruined by the well-known addiction to a permanent tan.

Gary Lipman, chairman of the Sunbed Association, said people need to be aware of the dangers of overexposure to damaging rays, but scaremongering is not the way to reach people.

'Using a sunbed or sunbathing must be done in a responsible way. It is the overexposure to UV [Ultraviolet] in general – sunbeds or sunbathing – that can cause a breakdown in the collagen of the skin, which can lead to prematurely aging,' he explained.

Shockingly, recent findings published in the Archives of Dermatology found that, for young women, the prospect of wrinkles is a far more effective deterrent from using sunbeds than the risk of skin cancer.ADNFCR-2885-ID-19790007-ADNFCR
